KEY POINTS:
ISLAMABAD - Up to 14 Pakistanis, including 11 soldiers, were killed in an ambush on a convoy last night, taking the death toll to 38 in attacks in the northwest in the past 24 hours.
The attacks appear to be revenge for the commando assault on the Red Mosque in Islamabad last week in which 75 supporters of hardline clerics and nine soldiers were killed.
Militants ambushed a convoy of police and paramilitary troops passing through Matta town of North West Frontier Province, where pro-Taleban militants operate. Two roadside bombs and two suicide bombers struck the convoy. A suicide bomber killed 24 Pakistani paramilitary soldiers and wounded 30 in the North Waziristan tribal region on the Afghan border.
