Six Australian mine workers sacked for planking

Six West Australian workers employed by an engineering and construction company have been sacked following allegations some were planking on site while others watched.

Contracting company Conneq, whose services are used on mine sites in WA, confirmed it has sacked six people following the investigation of breaches of safety practices.

According to the ABC, the six employees were working at BHP Billiton's Mt Whaleback iron ore mine in the Pilbara.

Two workers were sacked for planking while three, including a supervisor, were dismissed for watching and another for taking photos, the ABC reported.

Although Conneq's managing director, David Marchant, would not confirm whether the workers were planking, he said the dismissals were a result of a direct contravention of the company's employment conditions.

"Conneq does not tolerate behaviour that endangers the safety of its employees, subcontractors or clients," Mr Merchant said in a statement today.

"All Conneq employees are aware that they are required to comply with safe work practices and to immediately report unsafe behaviour."
