Police in Papua New Guinea's capital have shot at a group of protesting university students just hours before the All Whites played a crunch knockout football game in the city last night.
The students say police fired shots directly into the crowd in Port Moresby, who were protesting against Prime Minister Peter O'Neill.
There were conflicting reports as to the impact of the shootings, with Reuters reporting four fatalities but police said no deaths had occurred, though they confirmed eight students had been injured.
The All Whites were in the city for their semifinal match against New Caledonia in the OFC Nations Cup. The game went ahead as planned despite the shootings. NZ won, 1-0.
The Oceania Football Confederation said in a statement they have decided to play the two semifinals in Papua New Guinea's capital as scheduled after receiving advice from its security consultant.
