Newly-released photographs taken in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks by then vice-president Dick Cheney's staff photographer show shock and horror written on the faces of Mr Cheney, president George W Bush and national security advisor Condoleezza Rice.
The images show Mr Cheney watching footage of the World Trade Centre attack in his office. In one of the most remarkable pictures, he is sitting with his feet up, watching the coverage.
Other photos show Mr Cheney, Mr Bush and other senior staffers, looking visibly tense and worried, meeting in the President's Emergency Operations Centre, a secure bunker deep underneath the White House.
In one of the shots, Ms Rice has her lips pursed, a grim expression on her face.
In another, Mr Cheney sits with his arms crossed at the table, staring into space and frowning. He is also captured talking on the phone.
They also show the vice president and his wife as they flew by helicoper that night to Camp David after the attacks.
