Russia attack: Teen blows himself up at security HQ

A 17-year-old boy blew himself up in a "terrorist" attack that injured three officers of Russia's domestic FSB intelligence service, according to the country's Investigative Committee.

The local boy took an improvised explosive device into the Federal Security Service building in the northern city of Arkhangelsk today, the committee said in a statement.

The device "exploded in his hands" causing fatal injuries, according to the National Anti-Terrorism Committee.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has been informed of the incident, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on a conference call.

The teen set the bomb off at the entrance of the building, removing the improvised explosive device from a bag.

It was not immediately clear if the teen had meant to just leave the bomb or had also intended to die.

A 32-year-old man with explosive wounds to his face and arms is in intensive care, and a woman was being checked by doctors.

Arkhangelsk, also known as Archangel, is a strategically important sub-Arctic port and naval base on the White Sea in northern Russia.

The FSB and other security have been targeted in the past in another region, the North Caucasus, mostly by Islamist insurgents.

The FSB has been criticised by human rights groups for crackdowns on groups of young people critical of the authorities on social media, and has also been accused of sting operations to incriminate some activists.
