'Romanians for Remainians' adoption campaign offers hope to Brexit's remain voters

Since the spectre of Brexit first loomed Britons had been searching their family tree for options of an alternative passport in case Brexit was to eventuate.

Now, in a magnanimous gesture, the people of Romania have put out a hand to their prodigal neighbours in the UK, offering those Britons who voted to stay in the EU the chance to be adopted by a Romanian family. The daily newspaper Gandul, based in Bucharest, has started the "Romanians for Remainians" campaign, offering a new home to the 48 per cent of Britons who voted to stay in the EU.

The website calls on those who believe in a united Europe to leave the Brexiters, "quarrelling and bad weather behind" and start a new life in Romania. It isn't the first time Gandul has run such a tongue-in-cheek campaign. According the Guardian, when concerns were raised over the number of Romanians and Bulgarians coming to the UK in 2014 taking jobs and abusing the health system, the paper ran Project #WhyDontYouComeOver, offering jobs and accommodation to Brits who wanted a change.

According to the Huffington Post, in 2013 it also ran a campaign in response to adverts aimed at discouraging Romanians from coming to Britain, with a poster tagline "We May Not Like Britain, But You Will Love Romania".

It led with the claim that "Half of our women look like Kate. The other half like her sister".
