A New Zealand policeman and an Australian colleague fired warning shots at rock-throwing Solomon Islands tribesmen who tried to free a suspected multiple murderer.
The policemen saved themselves and two island policemen by drawing pistols and firing warning shots before a helicopter plucked them to safety.
However, their prisoner, Robert Tatave, wanted on charges of murder, abductions and arson, fled into the darkness, still handcuffed.
