Victorians aged under 18 will be banned from getting intimate body piercings under new state Government legislation.
The new laws will also make it illegal for children under 16 to get any type of piercing without their parents' written consent. A draft of the proposed changes will be released for public consultation later this year.
Intimate body piercings include genital and nipple studs.
State Attorney-General Rob Hulls said the Government would not support a private member's bill on children's piercings introduced into Parliament, because it had many faults.
"We believe that this is a much better approach and we would hope it gets wholesome support," he said.
"Appropriate regulation is vital to protect minors from potentially serious health issues," he said.
