NEW YORK - One Liberty Plaza, a 54-story building near the ruins of the World Trade Center, appeared in danger of collapsing today, sending rescuers scurrying yet again from the site of yesterday's terror attack that destroyed the centre's twin towers, eyewitnesses said.
Firefighters and police said engineers had warned them of the building's imminent collapse and ordered everyone out of the area. There were no immediate reports of injuries.
Reuters reporters near the scene said people ran for their lives.
"They just said get out and we ran," said medical worker Rochelle Rubin, who was at the scene.
Remnants of the collapsed South tower of the twin 110-story World Trade Center went down, weakening One Liberty Plaza, a firefighter near the scene said.
"There's a buckle in the building," said the firefighter, who asked not be identified. "It's ready to go."
Officials said they were also concerned about the Millennium Hotel in the same area.
Andrew Casey of the New York City Department of Information Technology said One Liberty Plaza was still standing, adding: "The one they're worried about is the Millennium Hotel."
