CANBERRA - A painting recounting Australia's indigenous creation myth has set a new world record mark for an Aboriginal artwork, topping A$1 million ($1.1 million) for the first time.
An Australian gallery paid A$1.056 million for Emily Kame Kngwarreye's Earth's Creation, which she said was about her life, lands and dreamtime myths. She began painting at 80 and completed more than 4000 works in the seven years before her death.
The previous record of A$778,000 was paid by the Australian National Gallery for Rover Thomas' All That Big Rain Coming From The Top Side in 2001.
