At least 10 people were shot dead at Umpqua Community College in southern Oregon by Chris Harper Mercer, 26. He died in an exchange of gun fire with the police.

Nine people, aged 26 to 87, were shot dead in a black church. Reverend Clementa Pinckney, a prominent state senator, was one of the victims. Police arrested Dylann Storm Roof, 21, a white man with a history of anti-black views.

Four people died when 15-year-old pupil, Jaylen Ray Fryberg, opened fire in his high school cafeteria. Fryberg also killed himself.
May 23, 2014. Isla Vista, California
College student Elliott Rodger, 22, killed six people - three in his apartment and the others on the streets of his small town. Rodger committed suicide shortly after the rampage.
April 2, 2014. Killeen, Texas
An Iraqi war veteran opened fire at military base Fort Hood. Ivan Lopez killed three and wounded 16, before committing suicide.
September 16, 2013. Washington DC
Twelve victims and gunman Aaron Alexis, 34, died at the Washington Navy Yard in a shooting that saw authorities lock down the nation's capital. Alexis was a former navy reservist who was working for a military subcontractor.

A gunman clad in black roamed Santa Monica, firing at cars, a public bus and buildings. John Zawahri killed five people before police killed him at the Santa Monica College Library.
December 14, 2012. Newtown, Connecticut
Sandy Hook Elementary School became the scene of the United States' second deadliest school shooting when gunman Adam Lanza opened fire. He killed 20 elementary students and six school employees. He also killed his mother and himself.
October 21, 2012. Brookfield, Wisconsin
Three women died in a day spa after a gunman entered. Shooter Radcliffe Haughton, 45, also killed himself. Other spa-goers fled, some bloody and still wearing bathrobes.

Five victims were killed when gunman Andrew Engeldinger, 36, entered his former workplace, from which he'd been fired.
August 5, 2012. Oak Creek, Wisconsin
An armed man walked into a Sikh temple and killed six people. The gunman, Wade Michael Page, 40, was the leader of a white-power band called End Apathy, which was linked to white supremacist groups. The police shot and killed him.

Twelve people died during a screening of Batman film The Dark Knight Rises. James Holmes, clad in body armour, killed 12 people, including a 6-year-old, and wounded 70. Holmes was sentenced to life in prison.

Seven people died at a religious college when former student, One Goh, 43, opened fire. Goh turned himself into police.
October 12, 2012. Seal Beach, California
A quiet seaside city is rocked by a shooting at a salon that left eight people dead. The killer, Scott Dekraai, 41, pleaded guilty and could face the death penalty. Among the dead was his ex wife.
January 8, 2011. Tucson, Arizona
Six people died and at least 14 were injured when Jared Loughner opened fire outside a supermarket as politician Gabrielle Giffords met with constituents. Giffords survived a point-blank gunshot to the head. Among the dead was a 9-year-old, the chief federal judge in Arizona and a great-grandmother who contributed to church fundraising.
August 3, 2010, Manchester, Connecticut
Angry employee, Omar Thornton, 34, drew a handgun at Hartford Distributors, moving through the warehouse and killing eight workers and then himself.
February 12, 2010. Huntsville, Alabama
Three biology professors at the University of Alabama in Huntsville died and others were seriously wounded by Amy Bishop. Neurobiologist Bishop had just learned that she would not receive tenure at the university. She was sentenced to life in prison.
November 5, 2009. Killeen, Texas
Thirteen people were killed at Fort Hood when military psychiatrist Nidal Malik Hasan Hasan opened fire inside a processing centre full of soldiers returning from or about to be sent abroad. Hasan was eventually sentenced to death. More than 30 people were injured.
April 3, 2009. Binghamton, New York
Gunman Jiverly Wong, 42, entered an immigration centre during citizenship classes. He killed 13 people and then himself. Police found 37 survivors hiding in closets and a boiler room.
February 14, 2008. Dekalb, Illinois
Steve Kazmierczak walked quietly into a large classroom at Northern Illinois University and opened fire. He killed five students and wounded 16 before shooting himself.
December 5, 2007. Omaha, Nebraska
Eight people died at the Westroads Mall when Robert Hawkins, 19, entered with a rifle, took the elevator to the third floor, and opened fire. He eventually killed himself. Six victims were store employees and two were customers, aged 24 to 66.
April 16, 2007. Blacksburg, Virginia
The deadliest shooting rampage in American history, on the campus of Virginia Tech. Thirty two people died and many were injured by gunman Seung-Hui Cho, 23, a senior. Cho killed himself.
