Despite military rule, Fiji continues to slide toward lawlessness today. There are several new reports of violence and intimidation, even though the day began on a hopeful note with the release of nine hostages held by coup leader George Speight.
Five police officers were injured, one seriously, when a police station was over-run by rebel soldiers.
Elsewhere, 53 prisoners have taken 26 hostages in a maximum security prison. And an airport near Suva is under threat from local landowners.
The seizure of the police station occurred in the city of Labasa, on the island of Vanua Levu, and is apparently the work of rebel soldiers and civilians.
Local residents said they heard gunshots near the station and five police officers were later treated in a local hospital. Hospital sources said one of the officers was admitted with serious injuries, while the other four had minor injuries and were sent home.
The rebels have tried to reassure business owners that no harm would come to them or their business. However, many shops remained closed.
In another incident in Labasa, villagers have been occupying an Anglican church since Monday.
The villagers reportedly want to discuss unspecified demands with the church and the Native Land Trust Board. It is believed that the church is on freehold land.
Meanwile, three inmates of the Naboro maximum-security prison overpowered guards, locked them up, and then freed 50 other prisoners.
The 53 prisoners have taken a total of 26 officers hostage, but prison officials have told the public that there is no chance of a major escape.
The prisoners want to present a petition to former MP Peceli Rinakama, raising their concerns about the condition of the prison.
There have also been attempts by locals to take over the Suva and Nadi airports today.
Landowners made their way to the Suva Airport at Nausori and blocked the entry to bring attention to grievances about their land on which the airport is located.
The airport was reopened after negotiations between the army and villagers, and the military have set up a checkpoint to control movement in and out of airport.
