WARSAW, Poland (AP) Police in central Poland are searching for two lead containers carrying a small amount of radioactive cobalt isotopes missing from a brown coal power plant.
The loss of the lead containers, each weighing some 200 kilograms (440 pounds), was revealed Thursday during maintenance work at the Belchatow power plant. The isotopes pose no threat to health while in the containers.
Iwona Paziak, a spokeswoman for the plant, said Friday the cobalt was used to measure the level of ash and were installed in 1992.
She says the plant and the police are searching for the containers, including at scrap metal collection centers, where they might have been sold due to their weight.
