Radio rape stunt DJs return to airwaves

Newsreader Geoff Field has apologised for the recent on-air rape revelation ahead of the return of Kyle and Jackie O to radio next week.

Appearing on Mornings With Kerri-Anne on the Nine network, the 2Day FM newsreader said it had been an "extremely emotional" time since the July 29 stunt, in which a girl, 14, was strapped to a lie detector and quizzed about her sexual history.

"It's been difficult. It's been difficult for all of us and I think we're very sorry about what happened," Field said.

"And none of us realised exactly [what was going to happen].

"Extremely emotional. I went and spent a week down the coast last week. It's been a hard few weeks."

Field made the apology during the show's No Junk Male segment, in which he was presented with a T-shirt bearing the words: "I am a diplomat p.s. I need to keep my job."

Joined by fellow guests WSFM radio host Brendan Jones, stylist Jonathan Pease and journalist Ray Chesterton, Kerri-Anne Kennerley asked Field: "Have you ever been strapped to a lie detector?"

Answering that he had, the newsreader, who is often the butt of jokes on the radio show, said: "They found out that I once had a dream about Kyle. That's all I'm saying.

"Next question," he added with a sigh.

The 2Day FM breakfast presenters have not been on air since August 3, but their employer, Austereo, yesterday gave them the go-ahead to return on Tuesday next week.

This time, however, stricter procedures will be in place, including a seven-second delay dump button.

Sandilands lost his Australian Idol hosting job following public outrage over the incident, and there were calls for the team to be axed from radio.

The Sydney breakfast show, which is being hosted by Chris Page at present, played a "best-of" the Kyle and Jackie O Show this morning.
