They have already tried their hand at selfies and Twitter, and now the Royal family has truly joined the ranks of the Facebook generation by posting a family picture on the social networking site.
The Duke of York, who has always been a keen photographer, took a snap of theQueen, the Earl and Countess of Wessex at Buckingham Palace which he loaded onto his official Facebook page, usually reserved for official announcements.
It was taken in one of the Queen's private rooms in Buckingham Palace ahead of a reception for charities supported by the Earl and Countess to mark the couple's 50th birthdays.
The Duke, who signs his personal tweets and posts "AY" for "Andrew York", wrote: "A family photo before we join the guests at my brother and sister-in-law's joint 50th Birthday Reception at Buckingham Palace, to recognise the important work with their many organisations."
It is the first time the Duke is known to have had a face-to-face meeting with the Queen since he faced a slew of allegations about sex with a 17-year-old girl, which he denies.
In April 2014 the Duke became the first member of the Royal family to post a selfie on Twitter after taking it at his Pitch@Palace event for young entrepreneurs.
Although Buckingham Palace, Clarence House and Kensington Palace have their own official Twitter feeds and Facebook pages, they have largely been run by the Royal family's communications team, and this is the first time a member of the Royal family has posted a family snapshot on Facebook.
