KEY POINTS:
The Queen Mary 2 sailed through the Sydney heads early this morning, welcomed by a flotilla of boats.
Crowds gathered on the shores of Sydney Harbour to watch the $1-billion ocean liner make its way up the harbour.
The ship docked at the Garden Island naval base at Woolloomooloo as it is too long to berth at Circular Quay and too tall to sail under the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
In the evening, the Queen Mary 2 will be joined by its sister ship, the Queen Elizabeth 2, when they will exchange a traditional whistle.
