LONDON - Annie Leibovitz asked Queen Elizabeth to remove her crown during a photo-shoot, prompting a frosty response from the monarch who rebuked America's famed celebrity photographer, a BBC documentary revealed.
The documentary, In a Year With the Queen, shows the Queen telling her lady-in-waiting: "I'm not changing anything. I've had enough dressing like this thank you very much."
The pictures were taken ahead of the Queen's 80th birthday and a visit to the United States.
Leibovitz is famous for her quirky props when photographing famous people-- Hollywood actress Whoopi Goldberg posed in a bath of milk.
She also took a picture of actress Demi Moore naked and heavily pregnant.
Leibovitz's picture of the Queen was more sedate but still it caused controversy.
In the footage, the Queen walked into a room wearing her crown and her Order of the Garter robes.
Leibovitz told her: "I think it will look better without the crown because the garter robe is so..."
But before the photographer could finish saying "extraordinary", the Queen gave her an icy stare and replied: "Less dressy, what do you think this is?", pointing to what she is wearing.
The film crew had unprecedented access to the Royal family at home and abroad during the year.
A spokesman for the BBC said the Queen is smiling in most of the footage.
