A 6.4 magnitude quake struck in waters off Indonesia this morning, the US Geological Survey said.
There was no danger of a widespread destructive tsunami from the quake, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre, although there was a very small possibility of a local tsunami no more than a hundred kilometres from the quake's epicentre.
The quake hit shortly before 0100 GMT (1400 NZT), reported Reuters.
The USGS said the epicentre was more than 160km north of Ambon in the Moluccas, and the quake's depth was 52 km.
