KEY POINTS:
A magnitude 5.7 earthquake jolted Tokyo and other eastern Japanese areas early Tuesday, the meteorological agency said.
The quake hit at 3.18am local time in Shizuoka prefecture, west of Tokyo, at a depth of 170 kilometers, the Japan agency said.
The tremor was felt in the heart of the Japanese capital, although there were no immediate reports of damage.
There was no danger of tsunami waves, the agency said.
Japan lies at the junction of four tectonic plates and endures about 20 per cent of the world's powerful earthquakes, which frequently jolt Tokyo and other major cities.
