SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) Puerto Rico's governor says one of the island's main power plants will be converted to run on natural gas for an estimated $60 million a year in savings.
Alejandro Garcia Padilla said Friday that the $50 million project at the Costa Sur plant in the southern town of Penuelas will generate about 300 jobs and help reduce power bills by 20 percent by the end of next year.
He said the natural gas project is expected to eventually generate 820 megawatts.
The island currently relies on petroleum to generate nearly 70 percent of its power, and customers' electricity bills are on average twice that of those on the U.S. mainland.
