SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) Dozens of Red Cross workers have launched a 24-hour strike in Puerto Rico to protest the organization's closure of all its blood donation centers in the U.S. territory.
The strike began early Wednesday at the organization's central office in the San Juan suburb of Rio Piedras.
The Red Cross had announced in June that it was closing its centers in October and laying off about 200 workers because of budget concerns. The organization will still provide other services including bone marrow collections.
Puerto Rico has several other blood donation centers, including a state-owned one that counts on more than 70,000 donors.
