KEY POINTS:
About 100 demonstrators who threw rocks and clashed with police in southern India to protest against right-wing Hindu attacks on at least 17 Christian prayer halls at the weekend have been arrested.
At least 40 people were injured when troops used bamboo batons and teargas on the protesters in the Mangalore district of Karnataka state.
The detentions come on top of the arrests of more than 50 members of the radical Hindu group Bajrang Dal.
The violence followed three weeks of Hindu-Christian clashes and 24 deaths in the eastern state of Orissa where thousands of security forces continue to patrol the Kandhamal district.
