KEY POINTS:
A powerful magnitude 6.5 quake hit off Alaska's Aleutian Islands on Wednesday, the US Geological Survey said, but it did not immediately trigger a tsunami warning.
The quake, only 33km deep struck at 2204 GMT (1104 NZT) 50km southeast of Nikolski, on Umnak island.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre did not immediately issue a tsunami warning.
