McDonald's restaurants across Australia were placed on high alert yesterday after several Sydney outlets received envelopes containing a white powder.
McDonald's head office told the managers of the 710 restaurants not to open any mail until further notice.
A police forensic laboratory took the powder for examination.
Two Sydney restaurants were temporarily closed and several staff treated by ambulance officers as a precaution.
McDonald's Australia managing director, Guy Russo, said the company was treating the matter very seriously.
"I want to reiterate that the safety of our customers and staff is our most important priority and that all our restaurants are operating normally."
