Prime Minister Julia Gillard says she will talk to Kevin Rudd about a possible new position for her predecessor.
Ms Gillard said she would announce her new cabinet lineup very soon.
"Obviously I have to have a set of conversations and make a set of decisions," she told the Nine network on Sunday.
"As you would imagine coming into the position as prime minister, there has been a lot to do. I am very keen to settle the ministry arrangements and I will be doing that as quickly as possible.
"I will have a conversation with Kevin Rudd during the course of the today."
Mr Rudd said last week he wasn't prepared to stand aside just yet and there was still a role for him in a Labor government.
Ms Gillard declined to speculate on a possible job.
"The conversation should happen first between two colleagues and we will have that conversation first," she said.
She denied suggestions that rancour over the ousting of her predecessor would result in a divided team.
"Let's just settle down a little bit," she said.
"On the best way of dealing with these issues, it would be between me and Kevin having a conversation."
"My view here is, my attitude is that I am prime minister. What's got to guide me and drive me is the best interest of the nation."
Ms Gillard said she would submit herself to the judgement of the Australian people.
"It's their birthright. They get a vote. They'll have that opportunity very soon. I am happy to be judged by all on the my performance as prime minister in the national interest."
