PARIS (AP) A new poll suggests nearly three in five French people would oppose France joining any military action in Syria.
The survey for Le Figaro newspaper comes after French President Francois Hollande and the United States have made it clear they believe punitive action is warranted against Syria for its alleged use of chemical weapons.
Forty-one percent of respondents said they would favor military action by France; 59 percent opposed it. The poll of 1001 adults was conducted Monday through Wednesday by the Ifop agency. The margin of error was about 3 percentage points.
Human rights groups say hundreds died in a suspected chemical weapons attack near Damascus last week.
Hollande convened his top defense advisers Wednesday about Syria, and was to meet Thursday with the head of Syria's main opposition group.
