KEY POINTS:
Chicago police are investigating an officer's use of a Taser on an 82-year-old woman who police say was swinging a hammer when they arrived and tried to subdue her.
Lillian Fletcher was taken to hospital but has since been released. Her granddaughter Traci Taylor said Fletcher suffered from schizophrenia and dementia.
AP reports that the Chicago Police department is trying to determine if the officer violated stun gun usage policy during the incident.
Taylor told the Chicago Sun-Times that her grandmother could be belligerent, but was only 155cm tall and no heavier than 70kg.
"My grandmother is easily confused," she told the newspaper.
"I just don't think they should be Tasing 82-year-old women. That's ridiculous," Taylor said.
In April, a sheriff's deputy in Florida used a Taser to stop a 92-year-old man from beating his roomate with an aluminium cane at a rest home.
