Police suspect a crocodile may have killed a diver on a spear fishing trip off Cape York.
The 49-year-old Cairns man disappeared on Monday and a friend on the same dive raised the alarm.
The man's body was found yesterday.
"There are indications that he may have been injured by a marine animal," police said. "The waters in far north Queensland are well known crocodile areas."
Police said the friend had returned to a moored boat but his mate never joined him.
A post-mortem examination will determine the cause of death.
The men had been diving off Bushie Islet, in the Cairncross Island Group, about three nautical miles off the east coast of Cape York.
In September 2005, a saltwater croc killed a diver collecting aquarium fish in the Northern Territory.
Russell August Butel, 55, was killed by the 4.5m reptile at Trepang Bay, about 200km north east of Darwin.
His 41-year-old diving buddy watched in terror as the man-eater swam by.
Scrambling out of the 4m deep water into a 10m boat, the New Zealander managed to drop an emergency beacon where Butel vanished and call for help on a satellite phone.
Distraught, he waited for almost two hours for help to arrive.
