KEY POINTS:
The fatal shooting of two Papua New Guinean villagers and subsequent burning of 30 homes, allegedly involving off-duty police, has sparked a government investigation.
Four members of a mobile police squad took part in a raid that left hundreds of people homeless, residents of Salus Village told PNG's Post Courier Newspaper.
But Provincial Police Commander Giossi Labi told AAP there was no police involvement in the attack.
"The police officers were there but they were not involved in the raids," he said.
"We are still gathering all the information, we are waiting for reports today," he said.
Two men from different villages arguing over traditional fishing grounds in the Salamaua district started the trouble.
One of the men shot was a Salus villager allegedly fishing in Lababia fishing grounds.
Salus' elementary and community schools along with gardens were burnt down in retaliation attacks by Lababia villagers.
The government investigation team visited Salus village over the weekend and are assisting the police investigation that began last week.
