Police force faces backlash over boast that female officers are 'not just pretty faces'

A Police force has found itself at the centre of a sexism storm after posting a picture of female officers with the caption "more than just pretty faces".

In a bid to encourage more female recruits, Police Scotland posted a selfie of three women in uniform on its Facebook page under the caption which has proved controversial with the force now facing a backlash for being "medieval" and "condescending".

Police Scotland defended the post by claiming the caption was written by a woman, however people took to social media to criticise the campaign.

"Woohoo, it's 1972 again! Maybe want to rethink that headline?" Diane Grey said. "I am sure these fine women are doing a great job - but commenting on their facial appearance? In this day and age? Not PC is it?"

One of the officers in the photograph, Superintendant Lesley Clark, has denied the accusations of sexism.

"The intention of this post, which was written by a female officer, was to illustrate the incredibly important role that women play within policing," she said.

"The picture features a special constable, a PC and myself, a serving superintendent who has been able to work within a number of challenging and rewarding roles throughout my career. We want to show that there are always opportunities to make a contribution.

"The image was intended to challenge sexist stereotypes and we welcome any discussion in relation to the importance of gender equality."

The statement posted by the force went on: "No offence caused folks. I was merely making reference to the fact these women (and men) work very hard and we are appreciative of all they do in their respective jobs - whether that's as a volunteer or a commander for the -division."
