JAKARTA - Indonesian police have finished their investigation into three of the Bali nine suspects, handing over evidence to the island's prosecutor which will pave the way for their trial on drug charges carrying the death penalty.
Bali police sources said dossiers on three of the so-called airport four of Martin Stephens, 29, from Wollongong, Michael Czugaj, 19, from Brisbane and Newcastle woman Renae Lawrence, 27, had been completed.
A file on Scott Rush, 19, from Brisbane, would be handed over soon.
Lawyer Anggia Brown, representing Lawrence and Martin Stephens, said police finished investigating her clients a few days ago.
"When I checked this morning I found out their files have been finished," she said.
A police spokesman said Bali police chief Made Pastika would announce the handovers tomorrow at a news conference.
Once evidence dossiers are received, the prosecutor has up to two weeks to review them and ask police for more information before handing the files to the court to set a trial date.
The airport four and alleged gang enforcer Andrew Chan, 21, of Enfield in Sydney, were arrested at Bali airport in April.
The four were accused by police of having blocks of heroin strapped to their bodies and Chan was hauled off a Sydney-bound Australian Airlines flight.
The head of the Bali drug squad, Bambang Sugiarto, has already warned that the death penalty would be sought for all four.
Chan could also face death, along with accused gang mastermind Myuran Sukumaran, 24, from Sydney, who was later arrested at a Bali hotel along with three others.
The dossiers were handed over a day after President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono vowed never to pardon drug smugglers.
Speaking to police narcotics officers and social workers in Jakarta, Yudhoyono said there was no point in campaigning for the release of foreigners in Indonesian jails.
"Both Indonesians and foreigners must serve out their sentences," he said.
"I call on all parties to respect Indonesia's legal system.
"There is no use in campaigning to change public opinion to free an individual found guilty of drugs offences."
