Mexican gunmen killed the police chief of a town across the border from Texas less than three weeks after he took over the local force with the aim of purging corruption. Six police officers are being questioned.
Assailants with Kalashnikov and AR-15 rifles fired on retired Mexican Army Colonel Arturo Navarro as he drove home in Piedras Negras.
Last week 70 officers walked off the job to demand Navarro's resignation, complaining that his leadership left them fearful of reprisals from gangs.
