Schools throughout the Brisbane region are being searched after rat poison was found in a playground.
The emergency began when a man in the suburb of Nundah found a note on his fuse box saying three school playgrounds had been poisoned. Green pellets thought to be rat poison were found at one school.
Detective Chief Superintendent Paul Wilson said the top priority was the safety of pupils.
Police officers will be visiting schools across the city to talk with principals and adults have been stationed at schools to inform children and their parents of the alert.
Police have been searching hundreds of school yards and have set up a hotline for concerned parents.
