Actor Paul Hogan is hopeful of resolving his differences with the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) after receiving a letter that his lawyer says is a positive sign.
"I can't say what's in the letter but we take it as positive," Hogan's lawyer Andrew Robinson told AAP.
"We've been hopeful of a resolution from the start and we remain hopeful."
The ATO is chasing the Crocodile Dundee star over an alleged unpaid multimillion dollar tax bill.
Two weeks ago it served Los Angeles-based Hogan with an order preventing him from leaving Australia, after he returned home for his mother's funeral.
Mr Robinson declined to say if the letter would lead to a meeting between the tax office, Hogan and his representatives.
But in a statement emailed to AAP, he said the letter received on Wednesday indicated a willingness to reach a resolution.
"As anticipated, a further letter was received from the Australian Taxation Office yesterday evening," Mr Robinson's statement said today.
"Agreement has not yet been reached but the correspondence indicates a bona fide attempt to reach a resolution, which will be reciprocated by Mr Hogan.
"At this stage, Mr Hogan is not able to comment on or reveal the contents of any of the correspondence."
