LONDON - A 73-year-old grandmother, who last week was organising her famous husband's 80th birthday party, today become one of Britain's most intriguing new life peers.
Eileen Paisley, who in October will celebrate 50 years of marriage to Northern Ireland's hardline Protestant firebrand the Rev Ian Paisley, will become Lady Paisley of St George.
St George was the ward where in 1966 she was elected a Belfast city councillor, entering politics before Paisley himself. Her husband, the leader of the Democratic Unionist Party, is now the political figure doing most to stop the peace process.
Former Ulster Unionist leader David Trimble, who was ousted because of his collaboration with Sinn Fein in peace negotiations, will also become a peer.
