KEY POINTS:
The secretary-general of the Pacific Islands Forum, Greg Urwin, has resigned suddenly, three months before the regions' leaders hold their annual summit in Niue.
Australian-born Mr Urwin has told forum leaders that because of medical issues, he could no longer fulfil his duties. The former diplomat's decision to stand down has taken leaders by surprise.
It means lobbying for his replacement begins in earnest in the weeks leading to the summit on August 19, which Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd will attend.
Australia has announced its desire to host next year's event.
