The influential Australian artist, cartoonist and co-founder of Oz magazine Martin Sharp has died at the age of 71.
Fellow artist and close friend Garry Shead confirmed to Fairfax Media yesterday that Sharp had died on Sunday after a long illness.
Sharp created the covers for Cream's albums Disraeli Gears and and Wheels of Fire and co-wrote the lyrics for one of the band's most famous songs, Tales of Brave Ulysses.
Artist Luke Scibberas told Fairfax that Sharp "was incredibly devoted to the making of art and the history of art" and that "he could turn his hand to everything".
Sharp had been suffering from emphysema after years of heavy smoking.
