A humble Instagram account is aiming to change perceptions of Africa being a continent defined by poverty, disease and conflict.
The account, Everyday Africa, posts photos from various African photographers showcasing the ordinary triumphs, hobbies and life around the continent. It is often accompanied by the inspiration for the shot written by the photographer.
The images include a young female lawyer being called to the bar in Nigeria, a stylish man with a mohawk playing chess in the Democratic Republic of Congo, a boy getting his ID photo taken in a Kenyan slum and a smartly dressed man in a suit getting his shoes polished in Guinea.
The images of daily life come from the in-between spaces of conflict and disaster that are not commonly seen in photojournalism. They depict the everyday news and push-back against the exoticising of African lives.
Ricci Shyrock who took the shoe-shining photo was attracted to the way it portrayed fashion as a class divide.
