ISTANBUL (AP) A day after the main Western-backed Syrian opposition group approved ministers for an opposition government, interim Prime Minister Ahmad Toumeh has addressed the war-torn nation for the first time and asked for help.
Surrounded by members of the opposition and most of his cabinet, Toumeh launched his televised address Tuesday from a hotel in Istanbul promising to usher in a "new era" for Syria.
He says: "I was selected to this job. I am not the best among you but I took the opportunity and responsibility on my shoulders."
He adds: "I ask all of you to help me and to share this responsibility."
The opposition government is tasked with organizing governance in rebel-held areas of Syria, although its ability to fulfill that goal appears limited.
