MONROVIA, Liberia (AP) Liberia's Drug Enforcement Agency says marijuana smuggled over the border from Sierra Leone by a member President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf's motorcade is valued at more than $4 million.
In a statement Tuesday, the agency said tests proved "the leafy substances" were from Sierra Leone.
On Monday, DEA Director Anthony Souh said the operation was carried out by Perry Dolo, whom he identified as the head of Sirleaf's presidential police escort. In a statement late Monday night, Sirleaf's office clarified that Dolo was a mid-ranking member of the motorcade and that his vehicle had been decommissioned prior to the alleged smuggling operation.
The DEA said Tuesday that Dolo and two other men arrested in connection with the smuggling had been charged with "illegal possession of narcotic drugs and trafficking."
