WASHINGTON (AP) President Barack Obama says he has discussed with Iraq's prime minister ways they can work together to stop the threat of an increasingly active al-Qaida in Iraq.
Obama spoke after a White House meeting with Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki . The Iraqi leader was seeking more American aid to combat the violence ravaging his country.
The violence in Iraq has spiked since American troops left in 2011.
Obama says the best way to honor lives lost during the Iraq war is for al-Maliki to work to bring about a functioning democracy. The two leaders also discussed regional issues, including Syria and Iran.
