A wounded woman is carried from the Banco Nacional in Monteverde, Costa Rica, after police stormed the building to end a bungled robbery that left nine people dead.
Five hostages and three robbers were killed in a gun battle with officers, and former presidential security boss Oscar Quesada was shot dead in the operation to storm the building.
The last assailant surrendered after being holed up most of the afternoon in the bank with three or four hostages, said Security Minister Rogelio Ramos.
Twenty people were inside the bank when the assailants first entered on Wednesday. Officials said that 15 people escaped, and three of them were injured.
