LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) Nigeria's government has called on all parties in Syria to exercise maximum restraint and to seek a negotiated political solution to the crisis.
Amedu Ogbole Ode, a spokesman for the Foreign Ministry, said in a statement Monday that the government condemned the use of chemical weapons, and supported the action by the United Nations to verify if such prohibited weapons were used.
Ode said the U.N.'s role was crucial to finding a political solution in Syria. He called for unfettered humanitarian access for relief supplies to victims of the conflict.
At least 7 million Syrians, or almost one-third of the population, have been displaced by the country's civil war, according to the head of the U.N. refugee agency in Syria.
