KEY POINTS:
MELBOURNE - The Victorian Government says tough stage-four water restrictions are likely to come into effect in Melbourne on May 1.
Stage four restrictions would ban car washing, and all garden and lawn watering, as well as the watering of sports grounds, except at professional sports clubs.
Melbourne's water catchments are currently 34.5 per cent full, about 5 per cent higher than the trigger for stage four restrictions which is 29.3 per cent.
Water Minister John Thwaites said: "It depends on how much rain we get in autumn and to a degree how much we save as a result of restrictions. We're working with the car wash industry to see how we can have the least effect on them."
