BRISBANE - A young woman sentenced to life in jail for murdering her baby has lashed out in court at her own mother, calling her a "gutless, thoughtless bitch".
Candaneace Lea Metius, 24, of Beenleigh south of Brisbane, yelled at her sobbing mother after the guilty verdict was delivered this morning in the Supreme Court in Brisbane.
The outburst came after it was revealed Metius' estranged mother had written a victim impact statement outlining the devastating effect the death of her eight-month-old grandson had had on the family.
"How can you sit there and claim to be a victim when you didn't even know my son?" Metius shouted as she was led from the court.
"You're a gutless, thoughtless bitch."
The jury took one day to return a verdict of guilty.
During the 10-day trial, the jury watched harrowing security camera footage which showed Metius using her hands and body to smother her son, Bray, at Brisbane's Mater Children's Hospital on October 21, 2004.
Metius claimed she was depressed and unaware of her actions at the time, but director of public prosecutions Leanne Clare argued it was "cold-blooded murder".
Justice Roslyn Atkinson described footage of the murder as "obscene".
"If we had not seen it, it would have been hard to believe it happened," Justice Atkinson said.
"Unfortunately (the video footage) does not show a distressed and depressed mother who is unable to control her actions.
"It shows someone who is cold and calculating in her actions and that is reflected in the jury's verdict.
"It's clear that you killed that little boy coldly and carefully and the sentence of life imprisonment is the appropriate sentence to impose upon you."
