MAPUTO, Mozambique (AP) Authorities in Mozambique say about 100 people have died in a diarrhea outbreak in a central province.
Aurelio Mausse, the medical chief at the Gurue district hospital in Zambezia province, said Tuesday that the outbreak started two weeks ago and is now under control.
Mausse says the outbreak was caused by a lack of hygiene among people who don't wash their hands before cooking and eating in markets and other places.
He also says illegal mining in the area has polluted rivers used by residents for drinking water.
No one suffering from diarrhea has been admitted to the district hospital since Sunday.
