Mother acts as surrogate for daughter in Japan

News yesterday that a Japanese woman in her fifties gave birth to a child she had carried for her daughter further stirred debate about births by surrogate mothers, which both the Government and a key medical association oppose.

The woman gave birth last year using an egg from her daughter, who had her womb removed due to cancer, and sperm from the daughter's husband.
