A Moscow district police chief opened fire on the street and in a supermarket, killing three people and wounding seven others - four of them critically, Russian investigators said.
Police Major Denis Yevsyukov, who heads a southern Moscow police department, was detained after killing a driver, a supermarket cashier and customer, federal investigators said.
Interfax reported that four people were hospitalised with head injuries and they were aged between 19 and 23.
Television network NTV reported that supermarket employees activated a silent alarm to alert police as the shooting progressed.
