The United Nations increased its appeal to over US$75 million ($110 million) to help 2.5 million people in desperate need of food in Niger.
A World Food Programme spokesman said: "With the situation deteriorating over recent weeks, our main objective is to save lives."
Some aid workers in the stricken country said there is food to eat but poverty is so rife that no one can afford to buy it.
