PODGORICA, Montenegro (AP) Police in Montenegro say they have arrested 22 people suspected of illegally smuggling hundreds of illegal immigrants who want to reach the European Union.
Balkan countries have recently faced an influx of migrants, primarily from Syria, who are trying to illegally cross into the EU's Schengen zone where they would face no border checks on the way to wealthy Western European nations.
Montenegrin police said Wednesday that the migrants were being smuggled from Greece, through Albania, Montenegro and Serbia. Serbia borders Hungary to the north and EU's newest member, Croatia, to the west.
The arrested group included people from Montenegro, Pakistan, Sudan and Morocco.
